Dear San Diego,
I recently caught up with Allison Bechill of Just In Time For Foster Youth in San Diego. She is their new Associate Director. When asked about her career path, Allison was quick to answer, “I’ve always been attracted to organizations and causes that are focused on hand-ups not hand-outs.” Just In Time serves around 700 young people, 18 – 26, who are former foster youth with a wide variety of life changing services.
Just In Time is a social-impact organization that serves former foster children in the years that can be extremely difficult for such individuals. Why? Former foster youth typically end up homeless, with national statistics suggesting around 70%. Thankfully Just In Time has stepped in to help the San Diego community.
Just In Time provides a network of support which includes assistance with: job searching, one on one mentoring, college prep, career coaching, rent, car buying, gas cards, trolley passes, books for school, finance workshops and much more. They also offer special low interest loans and help them with furnishings of all kinds. Allison Bechill shared, “I make sure the services and programs are addressing the real needs of the youth participants.”

One of the biggest needs that Just In Time has, is for volunteers who can commit time and talent. They need counselors to volunteer therapy sessions, nutritionists to teach healthy practices, yoga teachers to teach meditation and yoga, movers to help with moving, and drivers who can help (with their own vehicles) their participants practice driving hours for license requirements. The list goes on and on. Just In Time also needs gently used furniture (NEW queen & full beds only), gift-cards, laptops, printers, and school supplies. Lastly, they need new gifts for youth during the holidays.
What’s missing for youth leaving foster care? Lots. Let’s break the cycle!
Former foster youth who were kicked out at 18 don’t have caring parents looking after them. Do you want to help? If you are a person who can help in any way, contact Just In Time!
